Few spiritual traditions have been more consistently misrepresented in Western culture than African voodoo. Hollywood films, pulp fiction and sensationalist journalism have created a caricature that bears little resemblance to a rich, sophisticated spiritual system practiced by millions of people across West Africa and its diaspora.
As a seventh-generation practitioner of West African spiritual traditions, I want to offer a more accurate picture.
What the Word Actually Means
The word "vodun" comes from the Fon language of Benin and means simply "spirit" or "deity." It refers to the invisible spiritual forces that the tradition recognizes as active in the world — not demons, not evil entities, but the spiritual dimensions of natural forces and ancestral presences.
What Voodoo Is Not
- Not black magic by nature — authentic voodoo is centered on healing, protection and harmony
- Not Satanic — it predates Christianity and has no relationship to the Christian concept of Satan
- Not the "voodoo dolls" of Hollywood — the figurines used in the tradition represent Loa (spiritual forces), not victims
- Not primarily about cursing people — the vast majority of voodoo practice is protective and healing in nature

What Voodoo Actually Is
West African voodoo is a complete philosophical and spiritual system that includes:
- A sophisticated understanding of the invisible forces at work in human life
- Rituals for healing, protection, guidance and attraction
- Deep knowledge of medicinal plants and their properties
- A framework for communicating with ancestral spirits
- An ethical code centered on balance and reciprocity
The Living Tradition
In Benin, Togo and Ghana — where the tradition is strongest — voodoo is not a curiosity or a relic. It is a living practice maintained by initiated families and religious communities. The annual voodoo festival in Ouidah, Benin, draws hundreds of thousands of participants and is a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage.
"Understanding voodoo means understanding the African soul — its depth, its resilience, its intimate relationship with the visible and invisible world."
